And the mock-incredulous looks have it

I went into the kitchen to get some pop (yes, I'm Midwestern) and was apparently acting more chipper than usual.

Ben looked at me strangely and said, "What's wrong with you?" I shook my head and said "Nothing!"

"No, really," he said. "Are you hungry? Horny?"

He looked down at his hand where he was counting the possibilities on his fingers and looked back at me with the same mock-incredulous look I've loved for many years. And then, one of these:

speech bubble with ellipsis
"What else is there?!?" he asked (with feeling).

We busted up laughing and I asked if I could blog that. He thought about it for a second before approving... and there you have it.

Blue walls, white ceiling; Feeling accomplished. Sort of.

Little by little, the smallest bedroom in our house has been transformed into my office. Well, it was technically my office before, but a little paint and planning where shelves and artwork will go makes it suddenly feel like... like what I've not had for many years.

A room of my own.

Cue the melancholy of Virginia Woolf.

No melancholy for me today, though. The whole-house beige (wall AND ceiling color) has received a smack in the face. When we were house-hunting, we saw some pretty ugly room colors and carpet, so we lucked out in a way by buying a place that was all neutral. I just wasn't aware that neutral could really start to irritate me as much as it did!

So that's two rooms down and many more to go. We're leaving the neutral carpets in place for now since they're all still new (someone half-flipped the house before we bought it... there's still a ton of work that we've been doing).

Enough boring house stuff already! Why the hell haven't I updated my site in a long time or put up that new forum? Well, it's not because I haven't been thinking about it. Procrastination aside, here's what's going on.

  • Forum. I'm undecided about which open source forum to go with, as well as being nervous about the maintenance and moderation of whichever one I choose. Spammers overtook the last iteration and I was not very good about updating and administrating it. Without the help of a few dedicated people, it would have died long before I pulled the plug.
  • The Geek Test. The update intimidates me. Every time I try to tackle it, the test threatens to grow past 1,000 questions. I have well over that many suggestions that people have emailed me over the years, not including duplicates. Wow, right?
  • Site design.I would love to allow site visitors to select which design they'd like to use from a few themes. I first learned about this possibility in 2005 when I was working in SEO and my supervisor introduced me to csszengarden.com. Wouldn't that be hella sweet? I also want to revamp this blog design.
  • Site content.I've been overwhelmed at work (the pennies from the wee bits of advertising on innergeek.us are nice, but hardly pay the bills), where I've morphed into the Marketing Editor with a lot of writing and editing responsibilities. For a bit, I was also babysitting the website by myself... and it was too much for me to come home and want to think about looking at html in the evening. But I've had some good experience with writing on a daily basis for a lot of different types of things, and I look forward to ramping up content on innergeek.
  • Personal stuff.I've had more on my plate lately, but I'm trying to deal with it better. I can't ignore it, because it keeps running as a background process and rears its ugly head sometimes when I least expect it. How's that for vague? Maybe someday I'll want to talk about it online. Or maybe I'll write some angsty, thinly veiled autobiographical fiction someday. I feel better about everything today, and I will happily attribute that to my current listening selection: Dr. Demento's 20th Anniversary Collection. Existential Blues by Tom "T-Bone" Stankus will always be close to my heart for various reasons.

For now, the easiest goal for me is to blog shorter and blog more. Thanks to everyone who reads my ramblings, emails me and occasionally leaves comments. It's motivating and also makes me feel special (and not in a totally alienated "special" way).

The Zombie Apocolypse

34%

Mingle2 - Free Online Dating

What a fun little quiz! Thanks for pointing me to this, Mala! I'll have to go brush up with the "Zombie Survival Guide" I got Ben for Christmas.

And then I noticed that I missed the day of zombie reckoning for bloggers on June 13 because I was working an 18-hour day. That might have been fun to participate in! Oh well. I hope to share a little about my past couple days of working my brains out after I wake up a little more... I feel really jetlagged right now, which may have made the Zombie Apocolypse quiz even funnier.

CNN needs and editor

When I read the local Sunday newspaper, the Daily Herald, I've become accustomed to grammatical and spelling errors. It's not a big city newspaper, and I know that they don't pay their employees an extraordinary amount of money... for these reasons, I accept the fact that I will see glaring grammatical and spelling errors as part of my $1/week subscription. Just don't ask me about accepting the newspaper's url: http://www.harktheherald.com/

I've always had a knack (or perhaps a compulsionk?) for pointing out errors in written publications. I almost threw out the mass paperback edition of "The DaVinci Code" because I was so pissed that it made it to the Bestseller list and still had spelling errors. I'm not always a perfect writer myself, and anyone who wants to find errors in my past blog posts (or even this one) will probably be successful. I'm not perfect, but I'm not an idiot.

Which leads me to the reason for this little rant: an article on cnn.com. "Sen. Clinton: God got me through marital strife - CNN.com" was already a little grit-my-teeth as I wonder why our supposed secular nation obsesses so much over the religious beliefs of presidential candidates. The real irritant of the article is at the end:

"The danger of using good verses evil in the context of war is that it may lead us to be not as critical as we should about our own actions," Obama said to applause.

I, too, applaud Barack Obama for his statement. But I throw smelly, stinky poo at the writer and the editor(s) who didn't catch the error of verses vs. versus.

Rargh! Hulk smash. Hulk think CNN.com better than that. Hulk angry Hulk wrong.

Must...have...HD DVD player

Heroes DVD news: Box Art and Extras List for Heroes - Season 1 on HD-DVD | TVShowsOnDVD.com

Well, there it is. I haven't been purchasing many DVDs lately since we started Blockbuster Total Access, the copycat Netflix. I'm enjoying the whole catch-and-release, watching without owning concept. There are a surprising number of films (and TV shows especially) that I really wanted to see and afterwards am glad that I didn't just buy the DVD. Maybe it's helping me scoot away from the innate materialism of the world.

HA! Until I see something I KNOW that I "can't live without owning!"

HD DVD players are now going for $300 and Blu-Ray players are down to $800 with the format war still in high gear. Why on earth would people spend that kind of money (assuming they're not filthy rich or completely obsessed with having the next new thing) on a player and system that's still so up in the air as far as longevity goes? Well, now I understand a little more as I've tasted HD tv and "Heroes" arrives on HD DVD August 28th for $69.95 (on Amazon.com; SRP is $99.98). My birthday is in October. Can I wait? Or will there be a temper tantrum in August when my husband insists that we wait until the format war reveals a clear winner?

Last question for the day as I stall our carpooling departure time (Ben's car is in the shop): When will I stop obsessing over Heroes? Why am I so addicted? Damn, it's like biting my nails. I just can't stop.
