WTF Weather?!?
I honestly love snow, and I never want to live anywhere without a “real” winter. However, this winter of 2008/2009 is officially on my shit list.
It started early and has been a very wet winter for Utah—which is GREAT for the mountain snow pack, should it ever actually start to melt and fill the rivers and reservoirs with water. But there has been a little Springtime torture mixed in lately that is driving me NUTS.

Exhibit A: Sunday, April 12, 2009
I took this photo on Easter and thought, “Oh wow! Spring has finally sprung!”
It had been chilly and rainy in the afternoon but warmed up enough to be simply cool and delightful. Ben and I sat outside and enjoyed the early evening sun until it got too cold.
The past couple weeks have had spotty sun and more day-to-day clouds than I think I’ve ever seen since moving to Utah. I’m just being whiny*, of course. This is still no comparison to Cincinnati’s total of 4 nice days a year.

Exhibit B: Tuesday, April 14, 2009
It got colder again and rained for a good portion of the day. As I was walking on the university campus with my bold purple umbrella protecting me, I had to try very hard not to smile and laugh and all of the people who weren’t even wearing jackets, let alone carrying umbrellas.
It made me think of a recent episode of Heroes when Angela Petrelli chides Noah for being out in the rain without an umbrella. And then that irritated me because hello, Heroes? Needs to just quit being a telenovela and kill everyone off except Hiro. And then Hiro needs to be badass like Future Hiro in Season 1.

Exhibit C: Wednesday, April 15, 2009
It was raining again this morning when I left my house at 7:30. I was already grumpy (see time stamp in previous sentence**) and traffic sucked. (See also: Utah drivers suck.) My classes have been a joke today, and I certainly would have preferred to stay home.
So. I knew it would probably snow in the mountains, but it wasn’t supposed to get cold enough to snow down here in the valley… and yet here is the evidence that Mother Nature wants me to go home right now and plant my face into a pan full of warm brownies and take a nap, not necessarily exclusive of each other. Her mood swings are clearly contagious, and not in a good way. Father Time really needs to step up and give that woman/deity a full-body massage and her own pan of chocolate-frosted brownies. STAT.
It’s still snowing and it’s accumulating on the ground. I think I’m going to go home now.
*While I was being whiny about the weather, my friend in Edmonton, Alberta (that’s in Canada!) got her car stuck in a ditch in the middle of a REAL snowstorm. How lame of me to be complaining about RAIN and CHILLY.
**And many of my friends reminded me that 7:30 is NOT as bad as it could be. Waking times of 6:15 and 6am were thrown out, and then trumped by a military woman’s 4am wake-up call. I would get kicked out pretty fast if I had to get up at 4am on a regular basis. That’s closer to bedtime, people! Another career perhaps not for me: farming.

I’m with you on this. But according to weather.com, it should be rainy until this weekend THEN it gets up to the 70s, so hang on just a little bit longer. Plus, it will be 110 degrees before we know it so enjoy this while it lasts.
Whew, nice weather! Looks like global warming is in full force!
You can be whiny about your weather, too. From pictures I have seen of Utah weather this winter, you get a lot of the same weather we get in Edmonton. Ours is just a little bit more extreme.
Attempting to brush more than a foot of snow off your car = SUCK. At least there wasn’t a layer of ice under the snow.
Jenny, I’m crossing my fingers. Not for the 110 degree heat, but for the 70 degree warmth.
Steve, you’re right about global warming. Late April snow showers are a clear indication!
Terra, thanks for the permission to whine. I needed it yesterday!
Camilla, you got a foot of snow? Yikes! I had to brush off about 4 inches of wet snow when I got to my car yesterday, and woke up to 6+ here at home. But yes, still better than last month when we had ice and THEN a snowstorm.
That picture of the flowers is gorgeous- Do you have a snazzy, expensive camera?
Also, I sympathize with you and your weather dealings. Unfortunately, weather in Michigan is just about as fickle and unpredictable. But snow in April anywhere in the states just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.
Haha, expensive camera, no. I have a tiny Canon PowerShot SD850. The close-ups of flowers, where it looks like I have a pricey camera because the background is blurry, is courtesy of the kickass macro setting.
I would love to get a fancy camera with separate lenses one day. Even then, though, I think I would still carry around this tiny powerhouse to capture photos when I’m on the go. At least until they make reasonably priced cameraphones that take 8 megapixel pictures…
Also, while we’re dreaming about fancy cameras, I’d also like a tripod and a hi-def camcorder.
@Yvette: And I want a pony.
Many geographical regions claim to have “the most” unpredictable weather. Utah is no different. You are quite right, though, in that this winter/spring has been odd and longish. On one hand, I’m happy that it snowed more because we’ll have more drinking water this year. On the other hand, local communities and idiots alike will swear off any evidence of a drought and stretch our resources more thinly via development.
Your “Exhibit B” blossom photo immediately became my laptop background photo! Luckily I think you will give me permission to enlarge that photo and hand it in my dental office waiting room which is painted a color similar to the beautiful petals you captured!
I also enjoyed, and agree with, your comment on Heroes. You were the one who got me hooked on that series, thank you very much!
Would you be allowed to keep a pony in the backyard at your house?!
Thanks, Mom.
And no, I don’t think we quite have room for a pony!
