This damn 365 challenge

February 25th, 2010 Yvette Leave a comment Go to comments

It’s nearing the end of February, and I feel like the number of times I nearly forget to blog is increasing. I’m usually brushing my teeth or washing my face, perhaps recounting my day and creating a loose mental picture of the next day, and I suddenly remember: damn personal blog goal.

Sure, I could just quit. Missing one day in almost two months is still impressive to me, the Judger of Goals. I have formed the habit of remembering my blog. I have formed the habit of posting something on my blog even if it’s just a slightly embellished tweet.

But I still have not reached the point where I am truly blogging every day, in my opinion. Where I write something thoughtful and do more than hurry to post something so that I can just go to bed already. I feel like I’m about 50/50 on thoughtful vs. hurried. I would like that to be better. In order to improve that, I really need to begin blogging earlier in the day when I start having viable blog ideas rather than putting it off until I’m tired and ready for bed.

Being married to someone who self-imposes goals, I understand the stress involved to a certain extent. I never set personal goals. That is why I am a happy happy person. The end.

Hey Yvette, I just read an awesome e-book about blogging called Blogophobia Conquered: Overcome the 7 Most Common Fears and Create an Amazing Blog, by Laura Christianson. She says in her book that blogging every single day (or five days a week) can lead to burnout. To start out, she suggests blogging once a week for a year or three times a week for three months, just as a trial thing. At the end of each quarter, she advises to re-evaluate and adjust your publication schedule. She also says you should never blog out of obligation, it’s better to have a few quality blog posts rather than a bunch of posts that you just throw up there just because. It’s great to challenge yourself but you can’t pressure yourself too much or you will burn out, and I’d hate to see that because your blog looks great and I’m looking forward to reading more!

Marie: I guess it all does come down to pursuing happiness, doesn’t it? :)

Alanna: Thank you for your thoughtful comment. It’s had me thinking… and I decided to blog those thoughts here: Why blogging burnout is healthy for me
