DO NOT WANTs of Travel

March 22nd, 2010 Yvette No comments

In no particular order, these are truths that I wish had been falseths this last week.

  • Drove through a field of debris on the freeway a couple miles from the Salt Lake airport, which resulted in a flat tire
  • Ripped my right pinky fingernail almost all the way off while reaching into my luggage to remove my baggie of liquids
  • Like, seriously, about halfway down the nailbed. Bleeding and pain, bleeding and pain.
  • We accidentally left homemade fruitcakes (Ben loves them) and a pumpkin roll in the freezer instead of packing them in the suitcase
  • Read the departure time incorrectly for the first return flight, somehow ignoring/second-guessing what I did in fact know, and could have easily missed our flight had we not built in a lot of extra time
  • Didn’t get to see people or remember to do things (like pack homemade goodies) in the rush to make the flight one hour earlier than expected
  • Too much stress
  • Not enough sleep
  • Never enough time

On the bright side, we had delicious full-percentage beer with tasty BBQ dinner on Sunday night at a fairly busy bar/restaurant with my mom and loud alternative music I consistently loved. A refreshing change from my usual experiences in Utah.

And Cleveland radio stations, damn how I miss you.

Must-see OK Go music video for geeks

That title sounded really spammy, huh? You must deal! With! It! Because this is the most awesome music video you will see for a time period to be specified at a later date. It puts Doc Brown’s breakfast machine(s)* to shame… with a little help of some post-production tricks, I’m assuming.

*Edit to add that I am talking about Rube Goldberg machines here. Thanks for the reminder, Zeph!

Sore Throat Blues

March 7th, 2007 Yvette No comments

I woke up with a sore throat this morning. Not surprising, after being tired for three days or so despite sleeping more than usual. Gah. When I get the blues, I go way old school and listen to Robert Johnson’s Genius of the Blues (on CD, though, not original chipped stone or whatever).

If you appreciate good music and haven’t heard Robert Johnson, who may or may not have sold his soul to the devil according to legend, you should at least sample some on iTunes or just trust my judgment and buy the whole CD. Eric Clapton called him “the most important blues musician who ever lived.” Spend an hour with his music and you’ll understand.

On a more hilarious note, my dad forwarded me this link to a guy pranking a telemarketer. Listen with the sound on if possible, though you can also read the transcript. I laughed a pathetic, painful chuckle this morning because of it!

Barenaked Ladies music video

This mish-mash of music videos submitted by BNL fans turns into an amateurly delicious collage to the tune of "Wind it Up."

Featuring naked ladies (censored, mostly), lots of air guitar and my friend Noah Ginex’s puppets

The novel isn’t coming along so much right now. I went to bed early last night and feel somewhat refreshed, aside from the fact that I somehow pulled a muscle in lower back and it still hurts. Also, I broke my alarm clock this morning.

Ben was already gone this morning when I hit the snooze button for the third time and the whole button caved in without making the noise stop. I had to flip the button to off and actually drag my ass out of bed so I wouldn’t fall asleep again. Did I just say that I was feeling refreshed today? Well, I mean that in comparison to yesterday, which was also better than how I felt on Tuesday.

Anyway, Ben wasn’t upset about my alarm clock being broken because, in his words, I can finally replace my "1984 standard."  Yeah, it’s like the ones you get at Wal-Mart for five bucks and has the most annoying sound in the world.

Maybe I’ll hunt eBay for a flip-time clock like my parents had when I was growing up. You know the type? Before the digital age, they looked somewhat digital. About as digital as fast food joints’ signs that they change infrequently outside of their stores, even though they say "ish san  ich is her !"

Right, so that novel I’m working on. I’m taking it on a flash drive to work just in case, though I doubt I’ll get the chance to write much there. Tonight, however… I’m going to make the mad typing fiend come out again.
